PhD position in Ecology: The Department of Ecology and Environmental Science has
about 160 members including 55 PhD researchers and 55 PhD students (for more
information see the department’s homepage:
www.emg.umu.se/forskning/index_eng.html).

A new project financed by the Swedish Research Council for Environment,
Agricultural Sciences and Spatial Planning (FORMAS) in aquatic ecology,
entitled: “Eutrophication as a selection factor for the occurrence of
predation-resistant and potentially pathogenic bacteria in aquatic
environments”.

Project description
Eutrophication is one of the largest threats to aquatic environments, as it
causes a number of drastic changes in the system. One example is phytoplankton
communities that often become dominated by inedible, filamentous or toxic forms.
The underlying mechanism for this may be increased predation on lower trophic
levels, selecting for increased occurrence of predation-resistance in nutrient
rich environments.
Evolution has taken many solutions for bacterial resistance to protozoan
predation. Some examples are increase or decrease in cell size, production of
toxins, cell aggregations, biofilm formation, and resistance to degradation
within the protozoa. Some predation-resistant bacteria are also resistant to
phagocytosis by human macrophages, suggesting that protozoa constitute a
biological gym for the occurrence of potentially pathogenic bacteria.

The above theories will be tested within the PhD project. The link between
ecosystem drivers, bacterial functional diversity and epidemiological factors
will be investigated in aquatic systems. The PhD project will include field
experiments as well as selection and microcosm experiments in laboratory. The
tularemia-bacterium Francisella tularensis will be used as an example for a
predation-resistant and potentially pathogenic bacterium. The project is
performed in collaboration with ecologists, microbiologists and medical
scientists.

Assoc. Prof. Agneta Andersson, Department of Ecology and Environmental Science,
Umeå University will be main supervisor in the project. Prof. Anders Sjöstedt,
Department of Clinical Bacteriology, Umeå University, and Assoc. Prof. Mats
Forsman, Swedish Defence Research Agency will be associated supervisors.

Application
The application should include a letter of intent, certified curriculum vitae
that includes information on previous education, copies of the master’s
thesis, publications and other documents supporting your competence and
suitability for the position, and address and phone number to two reference
persons. The application may be written in English or Swedish.

Requirements
The recruitment procedure will follow
the Higher Education Ordinance (Högskoleförordningen chapters 5 and 7).
Prerequisites include either i) 240 ECTS credits (Swe. högskolepoäng) of
higher education studies of which 60 should be on an advanced level (Master
level), or ii) 120 Swedish (old) credits (Swe. poäng; corresponding to 180 ECTS
credits) of higher education studies if they were taken before July 1, 2007 or
equivalent competence. Education should include 120 ECTS credits (2 year)
biological subjects, 15 ECTS credits ecology or corresponding subject, and a 30
ECTS credits independent project in ecology or a similar relevant field. It is
qualifying to have good knowledge in ecological theory and training in microbial
ecology and molecular biology/genetics. The successful applicant should have
good ability to write and speak in English, creativity, power of initiative,
independence and ability to collaborate. Evaluations will be based on results on
University courses, quality of
master’s thesis, references, interviews and the letter of intent.

A PhD education is 4 years (48 months) and the PhD-student will get a formal
position at the start of the project (Sw: “doktorandanställning”). Up to 10
% as teaching assistant may be included in the position (then the position will
be extended accordingly).

For more information contact Agneta Andersson, +46 90-786 9845,

Hydrogen storage is a major bottleneck in the development of a future energy
economy based on hydrogen as an energy carrier. Key to competitive hydrogen
storage is the development of lightweight, cheap and safe materials that can be
reversibly loaded under temperature and pressure conditions suitable for
applications. Surface adsorption of hydrogen in porous, crystalline materials
such as metal organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs)
provide materials with record specific surface areas per gram material, and are
therefore proposed as potential hydrogen storage materials.

Our research focuses on the design of new materials using first principles
modelling, chemical synthesis and the fundamental characterisation of the
hydrogen sorption. Characterisation of the adsorption using macroscopic methods
as well as in situ neutron diffraction will be performed to determine which are
the most favourable positions of hydrogen in the crystals with the optimum
adsorption interaction strength. With this knowledge new materials will be
designed, aiming at improved characteristics and higher capacity. For this
research we have openings for two highly motivated PhD students who will work on
the project in close collaboration; one with a synthetic chemistry background
and one with a physics background.

Call for PhD applications in Information Technology
at Politecnico di Milano, Italy

The Politecnico di Milano offers 58 PhD positions within the Information
Technology (IT) PhD Program of the Electrical and Computer Engineering
Department (DEI). The duration of the program is 3 years and admission is on a
competitive basis. Most of the positions are supported by a scholarship with
competitive salary (approx 1250 Euros net per month) and additional support for
lodging is provided to the best foreign students. Applicants must hold a master
degree but also students that graduate in Italian universities by December 2009
can apply. Applications from foreign students and students from other Italian
universities are especially encouraged.

IT PhD Program:
The IT PhD Program offers young students graduated in scientific disciplines an
international and stimulating environment for advanced training and research
activities in the fields of Computer Science and Engineering, Electronics,
Systems and Control, Communications and Networks, with an emphasis on
multidisciplinary approaches. The joint projects with renowned international
research institutions make it easier to enter the world of international
research, thanks to interaction with scientific personalities and visiting
periods in laboratories worldwide. The industrial joint projects in applied
research allow PhD students to become acquainted to the activities of today’s
most technologically advanced companies, thus gaining the knowledge necessary to
a more conscious choice between a career in
industry or in academia. More information is available at the web site of the IT
PhD program (http://phd.dei.polimi.it).

Application:
The official call for applications is available on the PhD school web site
(http://pcsiwa12.rett.polimi.it/~phdweb/). Application deadline is in April 30,
2009. The PhD Program starts on January 1st, 2010. Please refer to the official
call for details on the application procedure and requirements. The selection
process is based on the CV, a motivation letter and recommendation letters. A
phone interview may be also required. Preliminary contacts among applicants and
faculty members of the DEI are highly encouraged. Please take a look at the list
of professors of the department and their personal web pages, and to the
research labs. A list of PhD thesis proposals is also available (please consider
that additional proposals can be obtained contacting directly faculty members).
This should help applicants in selecting one or more potential research topics
for the PhD.
Use the motivation letter to explain why you are applying for a PhD program and
what you expect from the program, as well as to present your skills and
characteristics that in your opinion can make you a successful candidate.
Include in the motivation letter a description of the research topic you have in
mind (even more than one if you like) and explain what contributions you would
like to add to the state-of-the-art. Also mention in the letter if you had
preliminary contacts with faculty members.
Ask to persons that know you professionally to write recommendation letters for
you. Remember that the selection committee will probably consider both the
content of the letters and the reputation in the scientific and academic
community of their authors. Write in your CV all the information that can help
the committee to evaluate your career and your skills.
