This is an interdisciplinary centre that focuses on the study of development economics, agricultural economics and statistical methods. The two PhD positions form part of the Junior Research Group on Development Economics and are expected to do collaborative research with other members of the centre. The Junior Group on Development Economics works on the theoretical and empirical investigation of a wide range of policy relevant issues. For example this group uses survey and experimental data to study participation in illegal activities, adoption of environmentally friendly technologies and redistributive preferences among others.

The selection will depend on the candidate’s research potential and the research proposal. A new project financed by the Swedish Research Council for Environment,
Agricultural Sciences and Spatial Planning (FORMAS) in aquatic ecology,
entitled: “Eutrophication as a selection factor for the occurrence of
predation-resistant and potentially pathogenic bacteria in aquatic
environments”.

Project description
Eutrophication is one of the largest threats to aquatic environments, as it
causes a number of drastic changes in the system. One example is phytoplankton
communities that often become dominated by inedible, filamentous or toxic forms.
The underlying mechanism for this may be increased predation on lower trophic
levels, selecting for increased occurrence of predation-resistance in nutrient
rich environments.
Evolution has taken many solutions for bacterial resistance to protozoan
predation. Some examples are increase or decrease in cell size, production of
toxins, cell aggregations, biofilm formation, and resistance to degradation
within the protozoa. Some predation-resistant bacteria are also resistant to
phagocytosis by human macrophages, suggesting that protozoa constitute a
biological gym for the occurrence of potentially pathogenic bacteria.

The above theories will be tested within the PhD project. The link between
ecosystem drivers, bacterial functional diversity and epidemiological factors
will be investigated in aquatic systems. The PhD project will include field
experiments as well as selection and microcosm experiments in laboratory. The
tularemia-bacterium Francisella tularensis will be used as an example for a
predation-resistant and potentially pathogenic bacterium. The project is
performed in collaboration with ecologists, microbiologists and medical
scientists.

Assoc. Prof. Agneta Andersson, Department of Ecology and Environmental Science,
Umeå University will be main supervisor in the project. Prof. Anders Sjöstedt,
Department of Clinical Bacteriology, Umeå University, and Assoc. Prof. Mats
Forsman, Swedish Defence Research Agency will be associated supervisors.

Hydrogen storage is a major bottleneck in the development of a future energy
economy based on hydrogen as an energy carrier. Key to competitive hydrogen
storage is the development of lightweight, cheap and safe materials that can be
reversibly loaded under temperature and pressure conditions suitable for
applications. Surface adsorption of hydrogen in porous, crystalline materials
such as metal organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs)
provide materials with record specific surface areas per gram material, and are
therefore proposed as potential hydrogen storage materials.

Our research focuses on the design of new materials using first principles
modelling, chemical synthesis and the fundamental characterisation of the
hydrogen sorption. Characterisation of the adsorption using macroscopic methods
as well as in situ neutron diffraction will be performed to determine which are
the most favourable positions of hydrogen in the crystals with the optimum
adsorption interaction strength. With this knowledge new materials will be
designed, aiming at improved characteristics and higher capacity. For this
research we have openings for two highly motivated PhD students who will work on
the project in close collaboration; one with a synthetic chemistry background
and one with a physics background.

The PhD student will conduct scientific research within the framework of
development of sensor platforms for electronic characterisation of DNA
mutations and related problems. More specifically, sensor arrays will be
developed based on impedimetric and isocap-based sensor concepts. An important
issue is the analysis of electric field and band structure effects at the
interface between aqueous phases, molecular layers and semiconductor surfaces.
Furthermore, attention will be focussed on the optimisation of the performance
of the sensor arrays.

Selection Criteria
· University degree in economics or applied economics, preferably at
MPhil level
· Strong analytic and technical capabilities in modern economic methods
· Proficiency in statistical and econometric methods
· Interest in developing collaborative research within the research
project
· A GRE test will be required for admission
· Fluency in spoken and written English (a TOEFL or IELTS test will be
required for non-native speakers)

About LICOS
LICOS is a research centre of Excellence at the Faculty of Business and
Economics that focuses on theoretical and empirical research of macro- and
micro-economic aspects of transition, institutional changes and economic
performance. LICOS belongs to the 12 “Centres of Excellence” of K.U. Leuven. The

PhD Program at the Faculty
The research project will allow the student to simultaneously pursue a PhD in
(Applied) Economics. The University of Leuven (KUL) has an extensive Ph.D.
program: about 160 researchers are currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Applied
Economics/Business studies or PhD in Economics. Usually, a PhD program takes 4
years, with the first year including important course work in advanced
economics.
